Happy Solstice + Things I'm Loving 🌸

Hi Reader,

Happy solstice! Whether it's the longest Summer or shortest Winter day of the year for you, I hope this current season is supporting you and offering what your mind and body needs. Where I live we usually have very mild winters, and this year if feels like a huge relief from the extreme humidity we had earlier this year and I'm enjoying breathing in the crisp air!

Something I haven’t shared much about here, or online in general, is for the last couple of years I’ve gradually been making my way through a Fine Arts degree, where I am majoring in Painting. After previously studying graphic design and working in the field for almost 20 years, it's easy to fall into patterns and simply replicating much of the creative process. When it came to art, I wanted to unlearn and rewire my creative brain and see where that might lead. It’s not easy to change how you think about your work or the process you use after so long, and even a couple of years in I still really need to push myself to get out of my designer comfort zones.

Did I need to do a degree? Honestly, after predominantly working in the online space for so long, one of the huge benefits of doing this has been having in-person classes and conversations, and connecting with so many people in the local arts community. And being a mature-age student, which I'm happy to say there are a healthy number of where I study, has been quite a different experience to when I was fresh out of high school.

I didn’t have any expectations of what would happen when I do finish, but I've loved where it's taken me so far and I'm excited for what's to come. I'll talk more about this soon, but I really wanted to share this with you since it's been such a big part of what's been happening lately!

I hope you enjoy today's email in the meantime 😊

Things I'm Loving 🌸

It's been a while since I've shared my recent fave things, so here are three of the latest!

BOOK:
The Practice by Seth Godin

Feeling creatively blocked? This book is a great reminder of how best to show up for yourself and your creative work. There were so many nuggets in this book; a couple I enjoyed are:

Art is the generous act of making things better by doing something that might not work.

If you are using outcomes that are out of your control as fuel for your work, it’s inevitable that you will burn out.

CARD DECK:
The Rose Oracle by Rebecca Campbell

This has been my go-to for the last couple of months. One of the messages I received from 'The Sun' card really spoke to what I've been creating in my art recently:

One of life's greatest blessings is to feel the warmth of the Sun on our face. To drink in the gold nectar of what Life has for us and to take a moment to bask in being alive. This is your invitation. To relish your aliveness. To embrace your joyfulness. To enjoy the simple things in life.

MUSIC:
Always Centred at Night by Moby

So many Moby songs remind me of specific times in my life; he's created a huge stack of iconic tracks. This latest album is inspired by the underground music Moby was surrounded by in NYC in the 80's and 90's. All the tracks are collaborations, and 'On Air' and 'Dark Days' are definitely my top two.

Hi Reader, I feel like I’m only just popping my head up from quite a difficult couple of months. If you’ve followed The Darling Tree since its early days, particularly on Instagram, you’ve probably seen our sweet dog Mambo appear from time to time. In August, we celebrated his 17th birthday, not really knowing how much time we would have left with him as his physical health and mobility declined. Considering we had some concerns back in January, he kept going in his usual stubbornly...

Hi Reader, In my last email, I mentioned the extra study thrown into the mix of my creative life, and consequently, I've had to try and improve my time management and planning. So I thought I'd share what I've been doing lately which you can read below. Thank you for being here. I hope you enjoy today's email 😊 Reclaiming time and attention 🌼 There is, of course, much discussion online about our attention and how certain companies aim to get and keep it. Taking back (some) control of our...

Hi Reader, Happy lunar new year and year of the dragon! My good friend and Feng Shui master, Grace Niu, has shared, "We are experiencing the most significant astrological event in Feng Shui, which only happens every 20 years", as we've moved into Period 9 this month. If you're curious about harnessing the fire energy governing this period, you can catch the replays of Grace's Dragonfire and Create Magic in 2024 masterclasses or follow her on Instagram for regular tips and wisdom. I had a...
